About Alexander Block
Alexander Block (June 1863 Missouri-December 7, 1913 St. Louis)
This Alexander is the son of Heinrich aka Henry Block and Sophia Block and thus he is the grandson of Daniel Block. He was born in Missouri, in St. Louis probably. His aunt was Dora Block Schwartzkopf Berwin.
He was listed with his family in Ward 10 in the 1870 Census, age 7.
In 1880 he was at Washington Street with his father’s family, age 17. In the second enumeration he was listed as a painter, age 17.
In the 1900 Census he had a family. His age was given as 36, born in June 1863. His wife Sally J. age 34, was born in March 1866 in Missouri. His children were Alexander 2nd, born October 1888, age 11, and son Richard born April 1900, age one month, and daughter Gertrude, born November 1893, age 6. All born in Missouri. They lived at 1628 Burd Avenue in St. Louis.
His death was recorded in the St. Louis Post Dispatch on December 8, 1913 as having occurred at 2 A.M. on December 7, 1913 at his home. Cause of death was carcinoma. He was 49 years old.
He was survived by his wife Sadie Block (nee Rodgers) and dear father of Gertrude and Richard Block. The funeral was to take place from the home at 1628 Burd Avenue to St. Peter's Cemetery in Normandy Missouri in St. Louis County.
He was a charter member of the Printing Pressman's Union Number 6 and also Pressman's Relief Society and a Member of Robert Emmett Lodge Number 294 of the A.O.U.W. and a member of Alice Lodge Number 2482 K and L of H. The A.O.U.W.was the Ancient Order of United Workmen a fraternal insurance organization. The K. and L. of H. was the Knights and Ladies of Honor, a fraternal beneficiary society.
His son Alexander 2nd who was with the family in the 1900 census was not mentioned. He died at age 18 and is also buried in St. Peters in Normandy.
