In his marrage to Rachell Amos they had 4 children die in infancy. Also after Rachells death in 1890 Alexander remarried Mary E. Riswick on 5 Feb 1891.

Obituary in local newspaper where he lived: Alexander Logan coates departed this life August 13, 1908 at 4:00 A.M. at his residence in Montana Twp., Jewell Co. Kansas. His affliction was heart failure. He was born in Alleghany Co. Penn. May 10 1840. He was an old soldier of the Civil War and was a Sergent in Co. K. 1st regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded at Port Republic, Va. in his left hand and was pensioner at the rate of $12.00 per month. He married to Miss Rachel Amos, Dec. 17, 1863. To this union were born 9 children, four of whom died in infancy. The mother died Narch 15, 1890. On Feb. 5, 1891 he was married to Mrs. Mary E. Riswick of Loveland, Kansas who with 2 sons and 3 daughters survive him. Three of his children, John W. of Wallace, Kansas; F. M. of Montana Twp and Mrs. Henery Forrey of Harrison Twp, Kansas were in attendence at the funeral. Mrs. George and Mrs. Blick of Washington, Ioma did not get to attend the funeral. Comrade A. L. Coates located on his homestead 37 years ago and lived on his claim untill his death without putting a mortgage on the land, showing his careful financiering. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church and lived a constant Christian, he died in the full assurance of an immortality beyond the tomb. He was a kind father, an affectionate companion, a true Christian and a good neighbor who now has gone to his final reward and it is said that their works do follow them. The funeral was held at Olive Hill Christian Church, August 10, at 11:00 A.M. from the test in REV. 21-7. Interment was made in the Olive Hill Cemetery, by the side of his first wife, (Rachel). The sermon was preached by the Pastor, Elder J.W. Tifton."
