About Alexander Collier

Birth: 1740, USA Death: 1816 Garrard County Kentucky, USA

Alexander appears in many records in Virginia and Kentucky, but little is known of his personal life. He was born about 1740 in Virginia or possibly Pennsylvania.

John and James Collier each received a patent for 400 acres located on what was soon called Colliers Creek in Augusta County (now Rockbridge}. John appears in the records many times but nothing more is heard of James.

When John wrote his will in October 1760 he stated "to my son Alexamder four hundred acres of land". This was a much larger amount of land than he gave to his other four children. In a deed dated 16 January 1772, Alexander sold "130 acres part of 400 acres granted to James Collier by patton...Alexander got by being heir to James Collier." I believe that Alexander was James' son and after James was killed (probably by Indians in a skirmish with Mohawks in which several settlers were killed) he was raised by John and Cecelia Collier.

In the spring of 1779 Alexander sold his Virginia land and moved his family to Kentucky. He settled first at Whitley Station, then moved to Clark's Run and then to Downing's Station. He settled on the Middle Fork of Sugar Creek about 1781.

Alexander is carried on the Garrard County tax list from the creation of the county until 1816. The 1817 entry lists "Alexander Collier heirs."
