He was killed in action at Tobruk, Libya in 1941 while serving as a Serjeant with the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), 2nd Battalion. The "serjeant" spelling was common among units that draw heritage from the British light infantry. Service Number: 2754689. He is buried in Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya (also memorialised at his grandparents' grave in Scotland).
