About Alexander Loomis
At age, 18 years. Enlisted, October 19, 1861, at Decatur, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. A, October 20, 1861; promoted corporal, prior to June, 1863; sergeant, April 1, 1864; wounded in action, May 6, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; discharged, November 10, 1864, at Elmira, N. Y., During the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia, about 6 May 1864, family tradition in the Loomis family says that Matthew Cowlin saved the life of Alexander Loomis, a fellow soldier, by shooting a sniper who attempted to fire on Loomis. Alexander's pension and military records indicated that Cowlin was an orderly Sgt. who sent Loomis to the hospital.
