Accident 15 - May 23rd — A fatal accident occurred in the Hecla Branch of the Calumet & Hecla Mine. Alex Mattison was instantly killed in the stope back of the 28th level, south of No. 3 shaft.

Charles Sippala, a partner of Mattison, testified as follows at the inquest held before Coroner Macdonald: "I saw the rock that killed my partner, fall. I was changing the drilling machine at the time. My partner took the monkey wrench to tighten up a nut on the hose pipe. I saw some sand fall from the back of the stope and jumped to another place. My partner saw the dirt falling too, but did not move. He was sitting down and a vein rock fell and struck him on the head, killing him. I think that the jarring of the drilling machine loosened the rock. We had tried, with a bar, for two hours to get down all the loose ground, but could not move the rock that fell."

Two other witnesses corroborated the statement of Sippala.

The jury brought in a verdict: "that Alex Mattison, came to his death, by a fall of rock in a stope at the 28th level, south of No. 3 Shaft, Hecla Mine, on the 22nd day of May, 1895, and that the accident was unavoidable."

Onnettomuus nro 15 — 23. touokuuta — Kuolemaan johtanut onnettomuus tapahtui Calumet & Hecla Mine -yhtiön Hecla-kaivoksessa. Alex Mattison sai välittömästi surmansa rintauksella tason 28 perällä, etelään kuilusta nro 3.

Charles Sippala, Mattison:in työpari, todisti seuraavaa tapaturmatutkinnassa, jota johti kuolinsyyntutkija Macdonald: "Näin sen kivenlohkareen putoamisen, joka tappoi työparini. Olin silloin vaihtamassa porakonetta. Työparini otti mutteriavaimen ("monkey wrench") kiristäkseen ilmaletkun mutteria. Näin kivenmurusia putoilevan rintauksen perällä ja hyppäsin sivuun. Työparini näki myös niiden putoavan, muttei liikkunut mihinkään. Hän oli istuallaan, kun malmisuonen lohkare ("vein rock") putosi ja iski häntä päähän, tappaen hänet. Arvelen porakoneen tärinän loystyttäneen kalliota. Olimme yrittäneet parin tunnin ajan rautakangilla pudottaa kaikki löyhässä olleet lohkareet, mutta emme saaneet sitä nyt pudonnutta lohkaretta liikahtamaankaan."

Kaksi muuta todistajaa vahvistivat Sippalan lausunnon.

Valamiehistö antoi seuraavan päätöksen: "Että Alex Mattison menetti henkensä 22.5.1895 kivenlohkareen pudottua rintauksella tasolla 28, etelään Hecla-kaivoksen kuilusta nro 3, ja että tapaturmaa ei voitu välttää ("was unavoidable")."
