About Alexander D McIntosh

Alexander D. McIntosh was born on Jan. 28, 1828 in McIntosh County. In 1850 he lived in District 22, McIntosh County with his parents and ten other siblings. He was a 22-year old carpenter. When his father retired from his job as lighthouse keeper on St Simons Island, Glynn County, Alexander took over from July 13,1852 until May 7, 1855. On July 13, 1857 he married Mary Ann Dwyer on St. Simons Island. In1860. Mary Ann was born on Jan. 8, 1837 in either Ireland or New York to Patrick M. Dwyer. Mary Ann's birthplace was listed as Ireland in the 185o census, but New York in both the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1860 the young couple lived in Darien, Georgia with their two children: Harriet A. (age 2) and Lachlan D. McIntosh (age 5 months). His occupation was listed as wheelwright. In 1870 Alexander (age 42) and Mary (age 31) lived with their children: Harriet (age 12); Elizabeth (age 7); Alexander (age 5); and Daniel P. (age 1) in Militia District 271 of McIntosh County. Alexander's occupation was listed as retired carpenter. In the 1870 census for District 22, McIntosh County, Alexander (age 49) and Mary Ann lived next to his father with their six children: Harriet (age 22); Mary E. (age 17); Sandy (age 14); David (age 9); Thomas (age 8); and Margaret (age 6). Alexander worked as a carpenter. For some reason Mary Ann now listed her birthplace and that of her parents as Georgia. Mary Ann died on Jan. 2, 1891 in South Newport. In the 1900 Crescent, McIntosh County census, the widowed 72-year old Alexander (mistakenly listed as Albert D.) lived with his daughter Harriet A. and her husband Henry R. Jackson. A 6-year old niece named Louise Amason also lived with the couple. Alexander's daughters, Frances, Euphemia, and Mary E. lived next door in the household of Peter S. Proudfoot. In the Militia District 1515, McIntosh County census of 1910 the census taker was not very careful. He completed Cowhorn Road on April 22nd, ending at family number 71. Then on April 23rd he began again at Crescent Road, but didn't give a family number or a head of household. The 82-year old widower, Alexander, lived with Hattie (listed as daughter) and Marion Bennett. There is a small notation above Marion that may indicate head of household and son-in-law is written in the box below the notation. (In actuality, Hattie would have been his grand-daughter and Marion would have been his grandson-in-law.) Marion worked as a railroad conductor, and Alexander's occupation was listed as carpenter. Alexander died on May 29, 1915 at Belleville in McIntosh County. Mary Ann Dwyer and Alexander D. McIntosh were both buried in the McIntosh Family Cemetery in South Newport.
