Alexander Semple was born 12 October 1833 in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK, a son of John Semple (1789-1860) and Margaret (McNair) Semple (1798-circa 1853).

In the John & Margaret Semple family, Alexander is the brother of Margaret (1820); Peter (1822); Robert (1824); William (1826); Andrew (1829); Janet (1831); Thomas (circa 1836); Jean "Jane" (circa 1836); James (1840) and Agnes (1844) Semple.

In 1853, Alexander Semple married Ann Marchbank (Craig) Semple (1832-1912). They became the parents of Jean Craig (1854); John (1856); Donald (1858); Alexander (1862); Margaret (1865); and Ann (1867) Semple.

Alexander Semple and his wife, Ann Marchbank (Craig) Semple, emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand in 1862. Their son, Alexander, was born on the boat in Otago Harbour in Otago, New Zealand.

Alexander was a farmer. Eventually, they lived at Double Hill, Waitati, Dunedin, New Zealand.

On 6 Dec 1905, Alexander Semple, age 72, died in Dunedin, Otago. On 8 Dec 1905, he was buried in Waitati (Blueskin) Cemetery, Block 10, Plot 39, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.
