Alexandra was born on Nov. 11, 1912, in St. Petersburg, Russia, and was raised in California. In 1935, she earned her registered nursing degree from St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco. In 1944, she married Sebastian C. Grieco, M.D. in San Francisco. He died in 1974. Alexandra then married Commander J.D.P. Hodapp Jr. in San Francisco in 1975; he died on Sept. 29, 2008. Alexandra was known as "Shura" to her family and friends. She pursued her career in nursing beginning at St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco, followed by the Shriner's Hospital for Children in that city. Upon marriage to her first husband, Dr. Sebastian Grieco, she became his office nurse and was his helpmate until retirement in the late 1960s. In her second marriage, she traveled extensively in this country and abroad, attending Naval Academy and ship reunions, and other military celebrations relating to heroic naval battles of World War II.
