About Alfred Merton Bates, Jr.
Alfred Merton Bates, Jr.
Alfred Merton Bates Jr., was born on 24 June 1873 in Avon Township, Lorain, OH. He is the youngest child of Alfred and Amanda [Carter] Bates. He married Julia Grace Sage (known as Grace), daughter of Charles Henry Sage and Emily Corrina Faxon, on 16 April 1894 in Cuyahoga Co., OH. She was born on 12 August 1875 in Brownhelm, Lorain, OH and died on 20 June 1940 in Elyria, Lorain, OH.
Alfred Jr. was in business with his father as a general contractor for several years. He went to work for the State of Ohio around 1925, working as an architect. He later transferred to the building division of inspection of workshops and facilities. There he worked his way up to field superintendent of construction and engineering.
Alfred was a member of the Sons of Veterans.
He died on 17 April 1944 in Elyria, Lorain, OH. Alfred had 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, at the time of his death.
