The Wellsboro Gazette - Thursday, 26 Jan 1922 An interesting reminiscence was brought to mind by the recent death of Alfred Boyden, a Civil War veteran of this borough. Mr. Boyden and his brother Sanford were privileged some years ago to visit the battlefield of Gettysburg, where they both fought and saw their names recorded on the monument there as having fallen in battle. A knapsack containing a bundle of letters, which one of them threw away during the fight, was picked up by some unknown men, who were killed, and finding the papers in the possession of the dead, the latter were buried as the Boyden brothers, who knew nothing about it until visiting the battlefield in after years, they were amazed to find they had fallen there in 1863.
