Alfred enlisted for Civil War army service in Company H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, March 28, 1864, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County). The 103rd was originally recruited in July and August of 1862 in Lorain County but additional men were recruited from Cuyahoga County in 1864 by a detail from Company H sent to Cleveland to fill its deplete ranks. Alfred died at Knoxville, Tennesee of an illness termed as "brain fever," April 9, 1864. His body was returned to Cleveland for burial in his family's plot on April 20, 1864. His enlistment of only 12 days appears to be, perhaps, the shortest of any man in the 103rd O.V.I.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 12 2022, 3:19:01 UTC
