About Alfred Francis Harrison
Alfred Harrison (1925 - 1999)
Brief overview:
Alfred (74), an elderly New Zealand tourist was killed by a gunman in Meadowlands, Soweto, on 30/10/1999.
The state-run South African television news said Phyllis and Alfred Francis Harrison had become lost on their way to a nearby whites-only Johannesburg suburb and had driven into the sprawling black township. An attacker had fired on them, breaking Mrs Harrison's arm and hitting her husband in the stomach.
The couple's daughter, Georgina Braithwaite, said at Johannesburg's J. G. Strydom Hospital that her parents had come to South Africa to celebrate their grandson's 21st birthday.
She said that when her parents had realised they were lost in Soweto, they had stopped to ask directions from a neatly dressed man with a briefcase, but two others had pushed him aside.
"The men grabbed my mother's and my father's wristwatches, and when my mother bent down to give her handbag to the assailants, they shot at her," she said.
"After the men took off, the car was surrounded by people and they were very helpful," she said at the hospital where her mother was being treated for the wound and for shock.
