ALFRED CUTHBERT NORVELL, son of US Senator John Norvell and Isabella Hodgkiss Freman Norvell, (born April 29, 1842 -died July 22, 1883) served first as commissary sergeant in the 23d Michigan Infantry, enrolling in East Saginaw, Michigan on August 12. 1862. Later he was a 2d Lt. in Bowling Green, Kentucky on February 16, 1863. He entered the Engineer Corps on August 5, 1863. He resigned for physical disability on March 7, 1864. While Commissary Sergeant he took leave for 30 days on November 1, 1863 to go to Detroit to avoid "heavy loss and great pecuniary embarrassment." As his mother was dependent upon her sons in the Army approved his leave, but he caught typhoid and could not travel. In his later life, he returned to Detroit and worked as a collector for the Detroit Free Press and as a bookkeeper. He died July 22, 1883 of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the heart. Newspaper accounts reported that he had financial troubles and had been despondent.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 15 2019, 3:09:45 UTC
