Some believe that during the Civil War that Alfred was a Confederate, others say a Neutralist, however, I believe, according to records I have found, he was a member of the Missouri Union State Militia during the Civil War.

It is my understanding that Alfred ran a mill in Eagle Rock, Barry Co., MO

Story of the Death of Alfred Reed as told by his some of his descendants:

Alfred Reed was killed by unknown assailants on the White or Roaring River in Missouri. Most likely the Roaring River. He was found by the Curry girls (young women) dead on the road, after they could hear him yelling for help, and was taken, by sled, back to the Curry Farm, where he was buried next to his first wife, Mary M. Phillips. It is not known why Alfred was killed, but according to genealogy notes from the daughter of his son, Sherman Monroe Reed, Alfred was a bare fisted fighter, who for many years, performed at fairs and other events, and held a championship belt up to about the time he was killed. As the story is told, he was finally defeated by someone about 40 years his junior, so obviously he was one tough man. He was nicknamed "Black Alfred". My speculation is that, perhaps, his death might have been tied to his fighting.

Alfred and Mary M. Reed are buried side by side on the banks of the Roaring River, just off AR86, on FR2260, just past Curry Bridge, right along the river, on the Curry Farm in a very quiet, beautiful, and serene setting.

Note from this researcher: Alfred Reed, my g-g grandfather, while known to be a son of George Reed, could not be proven as a son of George Reed by the researchers, Opal B. Phillips & Carrie Hart at the time they wrote their Bicentennial Project "They Came to Warrick County Indiana Volume III" which was published in cooperation with the local DAR.

My mother's sister Aunt Juanita (Reed) Frost interviewed her grandfather Ulyssis Grant Reed when he was still living and Grant stated to her, and she wrote it down, that he had met Alfred's brothers when they would visit in Missouri. They were Amer Reed and Maynard aka Minard/Minyard Reed, both recognized sons of George Reed.

On a DNA analysis recently performed on my mother's brother, Robert Grant Reed, he had a perfect Y-DNA match with a known male ancestor of Maynard aka Minard/Minyard Reed in the "Reed" Project on Family Tree DNA.

This was about the only way that I could find to prove this connection. ____________________________________________________________
