!BIOGRAPHY: Alfred George Smith Tate (George) was the first born child of Alfred and Mary Tate. He was born at 4.05pm at home (78 Sussex Way, Holloway, London) on the 10 October 1871, and christened on 23 November at the nearby Wesleyan Chapel in Hornsey Road. George emigrated to Australia with the family in 1886, residing at High St., Carlton. At 25 years of age he married 20 year old, Sydney born, Ada Cowell. The family of five lived at 10 Hampton Court Road, Carlton, [known as "WILREGWIN" after the children] to be the family home until 1968 when George's third wife, Muriel died. George [in later life he was known as Pop] was believed to have worked in the railways for much of his life, but he had an intense interest in boats, of which he was knowledgeable. He produced a model of a ship in a bottle (a prized possession of his great grand-daughter, Dianne Chilvers). He was remembered as being very patriotic to Australia, and very personable, particularly with the ladies. He never owned a car, and did not learn to drive. The children married: Will living in Bexley, Reg and his family moving to Melbourne, and Winnie in Sydney. When Winnie died with the birth of her second child, George and Ada raised her daughter, Gloria. With the death of Ada in 1948, George married Annie - but she died in 1953. His third wife, Muriel, survived George by 3 years. The family home then passed to George's granddaughter Gloria and on her death in 1969 the great granddaughters (Sylvia and Dianne) sold - a block of flats now sits on the site.
