Inquest:= WAIRARAPA STANDARD, VOLUME XIX, ISSUE 1890, 29 SEPTEMBER 1886

An inquest was held on Monday before Dr Spratt, coroner, upon the body of Alfred Waterson, who met with his death so suddenly at Matarawa, as reported in our last. Evidence was given which showed that the deceased was helping his brother to put a straining post into a hole. The post was a very heavy one and by some means it canted and the weight being more than John Waterson could sustain, Alfred ran to assist in keeping it perpendicular. It fell, however, and struck him upon the head, death being almost instantaneous. The jury returned a verdict of “Accidental Death."

MARLBOROUGH EXPRESS, VOLUME XXII, ISSUE 178, 28 SEPTEMBER 1886
ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

On Saturday afternoon, a distressing and fatal accident occurred at Dalefield, a sawmilling township in the Wairarapa. A lad named Alfred Waterson, aged 13 years, the youngest son of Mr John Waterson, was engaged assisting one of his brothers in erecting a wire fence. The brother had put a straining post in a hole and asked the lad Alfred to hold it. The post slipped and, in falling, struck Alfred on the left temple, the blow knocked him down with the back of his head on a sharp end of the stump of a tree, smashing it in. The boy died ten minutes after the accident.
