Alice Emery was born circa 1622 in Romsey, Hampshire, England[11]. This birth year is estimated by the fact that her maternal grandfather Walter Grantham bequeathed to "Alice Emerye my grandchild six shillings eight pence and if she die to be paid unto her mother at the death of her grandmother." Walter Grantham's will was proved on 5 February 1622/3[11,85]. Before 1644 when Alice was 22, she married John CHATER, in Newbury, Essex co., MA[11,86]. In 1657, Barbara Ilsley deposed that "John chater brought a beast to his father Emery" the previous year[11,86,87]. This is part of a case in a controversy between John Chater & Nathaniel Weare over some steers.
