PVT US ARMY WORLD WAR II
Born in Utica, she was the first woman in Utica to join the Women's Army Corps in 1943. She became a Gold Star Mother after her son John Thomas Belanger died in 1945 while serving in the Navy during Worl War II.
Moving to the Syracuse area in 1955, she served as president and in 1967 became department president of the Syracuse Chapter of the Gold Star Mothers. She oragnized Gold Star Mothers chapters in Utica and Rome and was department legislative chairperson for 20 years. She joined Army-Navy Garrison 3217 in 1961 and with her son Rick Belanger formed Garrison 385, of which she was paymaster for 24 years.
She was a member of Eastwood Post American Legion and was its first and only female commander. She was a volunteer more than 30 years at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Syracuse.
She died at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Syracuse, on Sunday, December 13, 1998. Burial: Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery.
Her son, Richard A. "Rick" Belanger, passed away in 1984.
