About Alice Julia Packer

1852: Epaminodas to Adelaide

Alice was born on May 24, 1851 and christened on May 27, 1851 at Clapham in Bedfordshire. She arrived at Port Adelaide as an infant, with her family aboard the Epaminodas in 1852.

Alice died on March 17, 1926 and was buried at Athelstone Gorge Cemetery. An obituary in the local press stated:-

Mrs N Packer, whose death was recently announced, was a colonist of 74 years, having arrived with her parents, Mr. And Mrs. George White in 1852, spending her birthday on the way out. She was born in Bedfordshire, England, on May 24, 1851. Her early life was spent at Hindmarsh and Beverley. About ten years were spent in farming the Hundred of Goode, West Coast. Mrs Packer had been a great sufferer (see note below) for many years. Her husband survives, also five sons and four daughters -Messers. Harry Packer (Cannington, WA), Alfred Packer (Highbury), Arthur Packer (Plympton), Herbert and Stanley Packer (Ceduna), Mrs Berry Fry (Athelstone), Mrs FW Spencer (Mount Schank), Mrs RC Harris (Smithfield) and Mrs ES Stephenson (Kersbrook)

Note: Her suffering is believed to have been severe arthritis necessitating the use of a wheelchair.

Mary died at her now demolished residence, Gorge Road, Thordon Park (opposite the Thorndon Park Reservoir) on November 4, 1942 aged 66 years and her husband on October 24, 1955 aged 83 years. They are buried at the Athelstone Gorge Cemetery.
