Philip Edward MATHEWS was the grandfather of the (late) Judge, Byron Henly MATHEWS, Jr., b. April 13, 1916, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia; m. Mary Jordan FREEMAN, December 24, 1941, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio; b. September 16, 1916, Coweta County, Georgia.

Judge MATHEWS was a well-respected student and collector of Civil War history, artifacts and relics.

He was an expert on the Battle of Brown's Mill (near Newnan, GA) and the Stoneman - McCook raid and wrote a book about this sideshow of Sherman's Atlanta campaign.

Philip Edward MATHEWS and my g-grandfather, William Boadman MATHEWS, were brothers and descendants of Moses MATHEWS (1725 - VA).
