Hazel Hoy: The family were stationed at Middelburg in the Transvaal during the Boer War (1899-1902), and were in a dreadful state because "the khakis" were coming. However, once "the khakis" arrived, they found them nice and kind. Alice and children were given passage to Cape Town by train, a dreadful journey taking days, and it was during this journey that Beatrice caught cholera or typhoid and died.

Dorothy Langham: It was said that Alice "saw dead people", which she used to report quite matter-of-factly.
