About Alice J. Shoup, ♊

Funeral services for Mrs. Alice J. Shoup were held at her home at Cotton Hill Tuesday. Interment was made at Oak Ridge cemetery. Mrs. Alice Shoup was born April 21, 1837, in Springfield. She was the daughter of Jane and William Mourer, early settlers of Sangamon county. On Nov. 18, 1857, she was united in marriage to Samuel N. Shoup and died May 16, 1926. Mrs. Shoup was a most courteous woman with kindly dignity and combined the rare elements of gentle firmness and business tact so essential to a mother and wife in the government of a household. As an illustration to the peculiar features may be mentioned the fact that during the time her husband was engaged in fighting the battles of his country during the Civil war, Mrs. Shoup remained on the farm, and managed all its affairs some three years, successfully. Her many friends regret her death. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL, 5-20-1926
