"Isle of Michael,Spain" seems to refer to Island of St. Michael of La Palma[San Miguel de La Palma], the most north-western of the Canary Islands,400 km off the Moroccan coast. Widely known as La Palma[Island]. This suggests that father Samuel Whittle was a mariner or a merchant...

Alicia Mary Whittle aged 27, travelled with her husband father (Henry Lloyd, 36, a Harness maker), and children (Catherine Mary Lloyd (9yrs), Francesca Lloyd (6yrs) Henry Lloyd (4yrs) and Samuel Lloyd (2yrs), as part of Willson's party (the ship crew) on the La Belle Alliance, from The Downs, Deal, Kent, England on the 12 Feb 1820. The party was led by Thomas Willson, an architect and commercial agent of Bridge Cottage, Chelsea Water Works, London. Willson was given permission to take out one of the four largest settler parties, consisting of 100 able-bodied men and their families. This was a joint-stock party, recruited by advertisement, and served to absorb the remnants of smaller parties whose applications had been rejected or whose numbers had diminished. Many of these men were London tradesmen.

Although most of the party were 'free' settlers who paid their own deposits, there were not many among them whom their contemporaries would have classed as 'gentlemen'. Several men, however, were sufficiently well-off to take servants with them: the Wilmots employed four servants, as did Collis; Cock, Currie and Willson each employed three; and Bisset, Lloyd, John Smith, Webb and the Rev William Boardman had one servant each.

Deposits were paid for 102 men and their families, and the party boarded La Belle Alliance at Deptford. After more than a month's delay before leaving the ice-bound Thames, the ship sailed from the Downs on 12 February 1820, arriving in Table Bay on 2 May and Simon's Bay three days later.
