Military Service: In 1936 I joined the Ministry of Defence and was employed by them in North East Scotland where I was involved in the Ministry's project for "Degaussing" Scottish Fishing Vessels. I was also trained how to deal with high explosives as the project was involved in the neutralisation of magnetic mines. In 1939 I joined the Gordon Highlanders as a sergeant and was posted overseas. Because of my experience in dealing with explosives and my knowledge of engineering I was seconded to the Ministry of Aircraft Production in the latter part of the war. I was discharged in 1948.
