An advocate of ecumenism among other religious views considered "liberal", he opposed the literal interpretation of the Bible, a hot button issue in the era of the Scopes "Monkey Trial". He is additionally notable as the patriarch of a distinguished American family. The father of the renowned Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, "spymaster" and CIA Director Allen W.
