About Allen Nixon

"Allen Nixon, son of William and Katie (Wright) Nixon, was born in 1758 and came to Amercia from county Down, Ireland, before the Revolutionary war. He was of English descent and served as an officer in the British army. He settled in Sussex County, new jersey, and married mary, daughter of John and Dinah (Pettit) Moore. In 1787 Allen, with his wife and small son, joined other Loyalist families and journeyed from New Jersey to Canada in that year. He was granted Lot 13, Concs. I and II, Grimsby township and he built his log cabin close to the shore of Lake Ontario. Later, when years of prosperity came, he erected a spacious farmhouse on the upper road. He also built the stone shop which, during the Wqr of 1812 and thereafter for many years, was used as a blacksmith shop. This is one of the earliest buildings left standing in our community, now the 'Stone Shop Museum'. When the Masonic Lodge was instituted here in 1799 Allen Nixon was installed as Junior Warden and to him belongs the distinction of having made the first tools and implements of the Lodge. Many of the furst meetings were held in the upper rooms of his house. In 1804 Allen Nixon was appointed a Lieutenant in the Lincoln Militia and he served his country briefly in the first year of the War of 1812. He and his wife Mary died within a week of one another in march, 1813, of cholera and they were buried in St. Andrew's churchyard, where his fine marble stones mark their resting place."
