About Alpha Soroos
Alpha was born March 13, 1910 in Valley City, North Dakota in the home of her parents Rasmus and Anna Pauline Soroos. She was the last (Alpha means first) of five children born to Rasmus and Anna. All of her siblings lived to be over 90 years of age. None of the children had middle names. Because she grew up in a Norwegian community she learned to speak Norwegian.
Alpha graduated from high school in three years and college in about the same time. In college she was in a literary society (sorority), sang in the Glee Club, played basketball and was in a dance group. Later in life she became an excellent golfer. She was class president her senior year. She majored in Physical Education and minored in English and History. Alpha graduated from Valley City State Teachers College with a certificate to teach and accepted a job in Frazee, Minnesota. She taught Junior High English and History and coached girl’s basketball. Although Gordon was five years older they graduated from college about the same year, 1930, because he stayed on the family farm and taught in a North Dakota country school before college.
Alpha went back to college after a year, and in 1930 married Gordon Stone in Moorehead, Minnesota. They raised five children; Marilyn and Rodney were born in Valley City, North Dakota, Susan was born in Normal, Illinois and Rebecca in River Falls and Cynthia in Hudson, Wisconsin. Each of her five children had two children of their own.
Gordon started teaching in a North Dakota country school in 1925, and in 1943 he began at the college level at Green Mountain Junior College (for girls) in Poultney, Vermont. He retired in 1976 as Dean of the College of Education at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wisconsin. Alpha lived 94 years and passed away quietly July 18, 2004 in River Falls, Wisconsin with Rebecca and Cynthia at her side.
