About Alphonsus Hardt
Alphonsus was a Swiss-Irishman, who had been born in New York City of a Swiss father and an Irish mother. After a short romance with Titanic survivor, Maggie Madigan, the couple were married in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church on West Fourteenth Street on December 28, 1913. They lived nearby in a tenement at 30 West Nineteenth Street in Manhattan. Al worked hard as a longshoreman on the docks to support Maggie and their son, Alfred, born in 1915. Al died suddenly at the age of 50. He was preceded in death by his son, Alfred, who drowned tragically in 1925.
