Alva J. Hurt

We regret that our newsletter is late this time, but it was ready to go to press when tragedy struck our family. On Sunday, May 31, my son Jerry and his family and I went to Casey to spend the day with my dad, Alva Hurt. We found him very ill, having suffered a stroke sometime early Sunday morning. We called the doctor and an ambulance rushed him to the Memorial Hospital at Mattoon, Illinois. He recognized us and was able to talk for a while, but he went into a coma on Sunday evening and never regained consciousness. His children gathered at Mattoon and took up a round-the-clock vigil at the hospital, but at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, June 4, he passed away.

ALVA J. HURT was born March 28, 1891 in Cumberland County, Illinois, son of Eli Mitchell and Nancy Jane Bryant Hurt. He lived all his life in the vicinity of Crooked Creek Township. He was married to Sarah Ann Lewis, of Greenup, Illinois, March 21, 1914. She preceded him in death on January 28, 1951. In August, 1952, he married Lula Henry of Casey, Illinois. She also preceded him in death in January 1964. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Hildreth Johnson, St. Joseph, Illinois; Wayne Hurt, Crown Point, Indiana; Mrs. Blanche Heldt, Gary, Indiana; Mrs. Helen Jenkins, Urbana, Illinois; Donald Hurt, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Jim Hurt, of Highland, Indiana. One son, Ernest Hurt, preceded him in death August 31, 1963. He also leaves two brothers: Elmer (Tell) Hurt, Martinsville, Illinois; and Luther Hurt, Marshall, Illinois; 19 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sunday afternoon, June 7, at the Bishop Funeral Home in Greenup, Illinois, with the Rev. Fred Carlen officiating. Mrs. Marcel Green was the organist. We laid him to rest beside our mother in the Washington Cemetery southeast of Greenup.
