Alverette was born third into a family of eight children to James Stephens Brown and Rebecca Ann McBride. Her father was prominent in early LDS Church leadership. He served in the Mormon Battalion and was present when gold was discovered at Sutter's Fort in California. Her mother was the second wife of her father. Most of Jame's time was spent in the mission field for the Church. Rebecca was a very good cook. She took in boarders to supplement the living for herself and her children.

Alverette married Christopher Wilson Sproat on October 30, 1879. They became the parents of seven children losing the last two when they were born.

Alverette died at age 55 of pulmonary tuberculosis. Christopher had died just six months earlier.
