History of Amanda Oja Nyrhilä 1880 - 1968

According to church records Amanda Oja was born Amanda Amalia Aukustintytär Nyrhilä on 14 September 1880 in Lapua, Finland as the 8th child of a family of 10 to Aukusti and Anna Nyrhilä.

Amanda's parents were Aukusti (August) Heikinpoika Nyrhilä of Lapua, Finland and Anna Tuomaantytär Jouppi from nearby Seinäjoki, Finland. The parents married on 24 February 1871 in Seinäjoki but settled in Lapua and raised their family - Heikki 1871 - 1888, Anna 1872 - 1873, Sanna Matilda 1872 - 1874, Maria 1874 - 1959, Sanna Liisa 1875 - 1875, August 1876 - 1935, Tuomas 1878 - 1879, Amanda 1880 - 1968, Jaakko 1885 - 1938 and Heikki 1888 - 1890

After his first wife Anna died on 6 May 1893, Aukusti Nyrhilä had a second marriage to Maria Iisakintytär Ala-Marttala on 22 Dec 1893 and that second marriage had another 10 children - Juho 1894 - 1894, Viljo 1895 - 1962, Heikki 1897 - 1909, Sanna 1900 - 1985, Iisaak 1902 - 1986, Eino 1905 - 1969, Saima 1908 - 1991, Helge Johannes 1910 - 1912, Helmi 1913 - 2004, and Aino 1916 - 1917.

The arrival date for Amanda Amalia Nyrhilä in Canada has appeared in documents as both 1899 and 1900. It can be extracted from a declaration document which said "gone to America in 1899". However, other records say that Amanda followed Juho Kortesoja on a passport dated August 6, 1900. Her overseas passenger record has not yet been found. Amanda and Juho married in Fort William, Ontario, Canada on September 27, 1900. Based on the suggested passport date, arrival in Canada has been deemed to be 1900.

It is said that the marriage of John and Amanda was unthinkable in Finland because John worked for Amanda's father as a labourer. Rumour has it that Amanda's parents told her that if she married Juho Kortesoja do not come back. In Canada, Amanda Oja was avidly religious and she opposed card playing and drinking.

Amanda's date of birth appears in documents as either Sept 14 (per church records), or Sept 15 (on a 1938 passport) when she travelled back on a visit to Finland in late May 1938 and returned September 1, 1938. Daughter Taimi Kallio says that Amanda celebrated her birthday on the 15th.

In Canada, John and Amanda lived in both Fort William (winter) and Nolalu (summer) from 1900 to 1904 and then permanently lived in Nolalu from 1904 onwards on their (homestead) farm in Nolalu, Ontario. In her later years after the farm was sold, Amanda moved into a small two room house next to daughter Taimi Kallio. The house itself had quite a history as it was orginally the Leeper train station of the old PD railway line. Eventually she moved into town and lived the remainder of her life in the Grandview Lodge nursing home.

Of Amanda's 19 siblings and half-siblings only 2 others emigrated to Canada. Brother August who first went to Montana and British Columbia then settled in Nolalu and changed his surname to Erickson from Nyrhilä and step-brother Eino Nyrhilä went first to Fort William but settled in Toronto.

Amanda passed away 30 June 1968 in Fort William, Ontario at the Grandview Lodge home for the aged.
