Includes NotesNotes for Amanda Elizabeth Mitchell: Amanda's parents couldn't feed her so they gave her away. note on family group sheet by Ruby Carter. "Amanda Elizabeth Manuel came to live with us, when I was about six. She was a troublemaker, for my mother, for over 20 years in our home. My father traveled a lot, taking chicken cars to New York by rail. He would be gone for three weeks at a time. Amanda would manage to get him aside and say, "Jessie had affairs with most of the neighborhood men while you were gone", She would "hiss" like a snake at the dinner table, whenver my folks were trying to talk. Each day she would go into their bedroom and spit on the floor...I was fascinated by her though, as she smoked a corncob pipe, sipped her whiskey (claimed it thinned her blood) . She read her Bible everyday and occasionally would tell me interesting stories about her childhood. She was a young girl during the Civil War. She and her brother were "farmed out" to other families as her folks couldn't afford to keep them. She really had a hard life...maybe that's what made her so mean. Amanda never washed her hair, however, she would comb cornmeal through it..Just like the Indians, it gave her hair a greasy look. Smelley too. If she ever took a bath..it was a sponge one. While I was young, I had to sleep with her, as we were short on bedspace. She demanded lots of covers, even when the weather was hot. You can imagine the aroma". ..Letter from Helen Dixon to Ruby Carter nicknames: "Lon" and Lonnie".
