About Amanda Emeline Riddle

Tuesday afternoon about 4 o’clock, Mrs. Amanda E. RIDDLE, a pioneer woman and respected citizen of this place, who suffered a stroke of apoplexy last Thursday, passed to her heavenly reward. She was conscious almost to the last minutes of her life and knew all those who gathered at her bedside. She was blessed by having in her presence all her children before she departed. Her son, Seymour RIDDLE, who had been at Hot Springs, Arkansas, for several weeks, recuperating from a surgical operation, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Lucile DOUTHITT, arrived Sunday. Her son, Oscar RIDDLE, who is a scientific professor in the Carnegie Institute at Long Island, arrived Saturday and remained until Monday afternoon. He came by airplane to Indianapolis. He returned Monday, having a lecture engagement to fill at Boston. During the recent years of her residence here and while she has been in feeble health, she was resided with her daughter, Mrs. Sarah YERIAN., The funeral services will be conducted at the Baptist church at 2 o’clock this afternoon. The services will be in charge of Rev. A. L. TIDRICK, Rev. J. N. A. DOWNEY and Rev. Jack MASTERS. Interment in Grand View Cemetery.

The biography of her life in brief, and obituary, follows:

Amanda E. (CARMICHAEL) RIDDLE, the daughter of Captain John W. and Susanna CARMICHAEL, was born in Greene County, Indiana, near the town of Hobbieville, February 24, 1842, and passed away at her home in Bloomfield on Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 1931, at the age of eighty-nine years, two months and twenty-five days. She was one of sixteen children. Out of this large family only one sister, Mary E. YOHO, of Center Township, survives her. At the age of sixteen years she was united in marriage to Jonathan RIDDLE To this union ten children were born. Two have preceded her in death, namely: Cyntha Ann, who died at the age of nine years, and Daniel V., who with his family, resided in Bloomfield for a number of years. The surviving children who are left to mourn their loss are Jasper, Sarah J. YERIAN, Milford and Mrs. JESSE WEISMAN, of Bloomfield; Seymour RIDDLE and John A. RIDDLE, of Vincennes; Mrs. Mell MITCHELL, of Lyons, and Oscar RIDDLE, of New York City; also twenty-three grandchildren. On June 16, 1883, her companion passed away, leaving her the full responsibility of caring for and raring her family. She worked, sacrificed and managed as only one of endurance and will could do. She got her inspiration from a higher source than human thinking. In her life’s work, we see restored to earth that faith which, whenever man has let it work its miracle, has wrought victory here and immortality hereafter. The Master’s message was at once her guaranty and her command. The Bible was to her, in very truth divine. In 1885 she joined the Baptist Church at Hebron, in Monroe County, and was steadfast in her faith. She with her family, moved to Bloomfield on March 12, 1894 where the younger children could have an opportunity to attend school and she could keep the home in readiness for the boys when their tasks were done. As the years passed, the children, one by one, in homes of their own—duty calling them to other places==she still kept the home fires burning. And her greatest joy for years has been in having the children, grandchildren and her sister coming to visit her. For a number of years her daughter, Sarah YERIAN, has been her constant companion and cared for her with the tenderest care. As she grew weaker and more dependent, the greater love and care was given her by all of her children. Nothing was left undone that human hands could do, but her task was finished, Tuesday afternoon she fell asleep.
