About Amherst Bailey
Jeffery Amherst Bailey is an enigma. He has been identified as one of Jacob Bailey and Prudence Noyes' 10 children in the reference "History of Newbury, Vermont, from the discovery of the Coös country to present time, with genealogical records of many families" written in 1902 by Frederic Palmer Wells (this reference includes an accurate and detailed account of the descendants of General Jacob Bailey -- all "Baileys" who remained in the Newbury area are identified through at least two generations). The Wells' reference correctly identifies Jeffery Amherst's birth date as 16 Jan 1760 and indicates he "married a Stevens" but gives no further details. Independent records have been found (birth, marriages, deaths, etc.) for ALL of Jacob's children except Jeffery Amherst; we have only his official birth record and the cryptic note in the Well's reference indicating he survived childhood and married.
There is an "Abigail Bailey, born 1802 in Vermont" who married James Flanders and resided in Benton, New Hampshire (across the river from Newbury) for a while. About 1850, James and his family migrated to Michigan -- stopping in Vermont to visit "Grandpa Bailey" (presumably Abigail's father); the account of this visit is documented in the paper "Pa's Story -- Chapter 1" by Elizabeth Flanders Orr (Abigail's daughter). Family lore is that Abigail's father was Jeffrey Amherst Bailey - son of General Jacob Bailey - and the content of story corroborates this because the tales told are clearly about the exploits of Jacob Bailey. The visit was made about 1850 which would make J. Amherst 90 years old. While this seems problematic, J. Amherst's younger brother Isaac lived to be 83 and was also alive in 1850.
We're certain that Abigail Bailey Flanders is not the daughter of Jacob Bailey's other sons. It is highly likely that she is the granddaughter of Jacob, based on the information documented by Elizabeth Flanders Orr. What seems most probable is that Jeffery Amherst and his family moved away from Newbury to a less populated area where his life events were not recorded and that Abigail Bailey Flanders is his daughter.
There were two Amherst Baileys living about this time; one the child of Jacob and Prudence ("our" Amherst) and the other the child of Silas and Lucy; these men are often confused. Our Amherst married a Stevens
