About Amund Rosten

From the Rosten Genealogy by John Midtdal:

Amund, born 15 May 1834, died 24 May 1914 at Crooks, SD. Married 3 July 1864 to Margrete Pedersdaugther Jonasgaard, born 8 June 1839 in Røros, Norway, died 29 July 1912 at Crooks, SD. Parents: Peder Olsen Undsgaard born 4 October 1814 died 2 September 1890 and Dori Mikkeldaugther Jonasvollen, born 1815, died 24 January 1882. Amund and Margrethe Røsten emigrated from Norway in 1871, and came to Rushford, MN, where they lived for one year. Moved from there to Blue Earth County, MN, where they leased a farm for four years. Came to Minnehaha County, Dakota Territory in 1876 and took homestead in Section 11 of Benton Township where they lived until their deaths. They were members of West Nidaros Lutheran Church. Amund went back to visit the Old Country in 1891 and again in 1904 when son Magnus went with his parents. When Amund and Margrethe left Norway in 1871 they were very poor, but the years were good to them in America and Amund sent money back to Norway for a "Hospital" or "Old People's Home" in Tolga two different times ($500 each time). $500 for a church bell for the church at Tolga, and $500 for a church bell at Tufsingdalen.

Before his marriage to Margrete, Amund had previously with Gjertrud Kartine Eriksdaugther Kvilvang, born 25 Sept. 1825, parents: Erik Olsen Korssjøen (later Sather North) born 1795, died 20 July 1862 and Beret Iversdaughter Kvilvang, baptized 28 March 1784, died 9 June 1869, a son: Amund, born 25 August 1857, died 4 August 1939. This Amund was called "Skjev-Amund" or just "Skjeven" (lopsided) as he was slightly paralyzed on one side. He grew up at Kvilvang where he lived in 1875. When his mother died, his father, Amund, paid the mortgage at Røsten so his son Amund would have a home there until he died. He is buried at the cemetery in Tufingsdalen.

ROSTEN, AMOND, is a native of Norway, and was born May 15, 1834. He emigrated to the United States in 1870, and settled in Minnesota. In 1876 he removed from there to Dakota and located in this county, taking up as a homestead the northeast quarter of section 11 in Benton, to which he has since added by purchasing the southwest quarter of section 12. He has a good farm and is a respected citizen.

Benton Township: The Swedes are in the majority here, but one Norwegian, Lars Ulviden from the Trondhjem District was however the first settler in 1870. It is especially in the northeastern corner that the Norwegians are in the majority and most of them are from the Trondhjem district. Among the first settlers can be named; Andrew Baker and son John 1874; Syver Helgeson, 1872; Nels N. Nelson 1873; Amund Rosten 1876; Hemming Tidemann 1875; Sever Wilckinson, 1872.....
