About Amy Symes

From the will of Elizabeth Langton, sister of Amy Bridges, Doynton, County Glouchester. Widow 13-1-1669, is included "I give unto Wm Symes, Thomas Symes, and Richard Symes, sons of my nephew Wm Symes, the sum of 10 Pds apece and I give unto sister Amy Symes the like sum".


Their third son, Thomas Symes, Inherited the family estate of his great-grandfather, John Symes of Barwick, and became involved in the mercantile & shipping businesses, sending ships to the new world to bring back products for sales. Thomas Symes married Amy Bridges, who was the daughter of Edward Bridges, Esq., and Phillipa Speke. Thomas and Amy had eight boys and four girls. Several of the younger sons went to the West Indes in connection with the mercantile business that their father had established.

  • The birth date is suspect. The tomb inscription say she was 17 yrs inher minority and 20 years married. This makes her 37 when she died. So her birth is more likely to be 1825..26.

Notes==There are notes calling her Lady Keynsham this is highly unlikely as she was the 5th child and 3rd daughter. Not the most likely way to inherit a title.

In Memory of Amy, the wife of Thomas Symes, Esqr. of this Parish, Daughter of Edward Bridges, of Keynsham in the County of Somerset, Esqr. descended from the noble Family of the Lord Chandois, Baron of Sudely Castle in the County of Gloucester, who through her Extraction was Honourable, yet by her Examplary Life and Manners became an honour to her Family and after 17 Years spent in her minority and 20 Years in Wedlock in which interval she was mother of twelve Sons and four Daughters, changed this mortal State for an immortall the 30th of April 1662.
