About Anders Roe

Anders Roe was born in Norway in 1844. He emigrated in 1852 at the age of eight with his parents to settle in Wisconsin (Dane, Jefferson and Columbia counties each for a short time) and finally Portage County.

Anders served one year in the Union army during the closing days of the Civil War, starting in September 1864 (Fifth Wisconsin volunteers) and seeing action in the battle of Petersburg, Virginia, on April 2, 1865 and the battle of Sailors Creek, where he was slightly wounded, but did not leave ranks. He also assisted at the in the closing days at Appomattox Court House, when General Lee and twenty-five thousand men surrendered. He was mustered out of the army at Hall's Hill, near Washington, DC, on June 20, 1865.

In 1866, Alfred married Elsie Fredrickson in Wisconsin and, after moving to Minnesota, to this union five children were born. Elsie was apparently carrying Julian when the move to Minnesota started.

Anders returned to his home after the war and traveled with his wife by ox team to Jackson County, MN, in the spring of 1868. They traveled with other families to St Charles, MN, and then all of the families went in different directions. At that time the trail they took to Jackson had only two buildings between Fairmont and Jackson; one between Fairmont and present-day Sherburn and the other very near present-day Sherburn. The latter was known as the Lone Cedar postoffice.

During the trip, the team mired in Ten-mile Creek, so they had to unload and reload to get out of the mire. They also discovered that they had traveled too far to the south to the area of later day Tenhassen before they realized their error. They reached Jackson County on June 28, 1868.

Anders took a homestead and farmed until the grasshopper scourge (see description under Gunder Anderson), when he sought work at the John Paul Lumber company in Jackson.

Anders moved his family to Lakefield to become manager of the John Paul Lumber company there until it closed. He then took over the Sherburn yard for three years, after which he returned to his farm.

Anders Roe also served as County Sheriff, and Judge of Probate for two years.
