About Andrew Haley, Jr.

Andrew Haley's will made out 8 April 1725. Mentions three sons and three daughters; land and buildings on Spruce Creek; reserved orchard fruit for wife Elizabeth. He wrote his name Hally. The inventory of his estate was complete by 2 July 1725, one thousand one hundred seventy six pounds,sixteen shillings, seven pence., with a few pounds additional returned two years later.

His widow was published to Nicholas Weeks.

(II) Andrew (2), son of Andrew (1) Haley, married July 15, 1697, Elizabeth Scammon, daughter of Humphrey Scammon, and settled on the Haley homestead. He had grants of land in 1694-99. He made his will April 8, 1725, and mentions three sons and three daughters; land and buildings on Spruce creek; reserved orchard fruit for wife Elizabeth. He wrote his name Hally. The inventory of his estate was returned July 2, 1725, one thousand one hundred and seventy-six pounds, sixteen shillings and seven pence, with a few pounds additional returned two years later.

His widow was published to Nicholas Weeks, Aug. 14, 1742. Children: 1. Elizabeth, born Jan. 25, 1698, owned the covenant Jan. 14, 1719; married Dec. 29, 1726, Peter Lewis. 2. Andrew, born Jan. 22, 1700, married Aug. 7, 1727, Mary Bryar, and inherited the Haley Homestead. 3. William, born Feb. 17, 1704, probably died young. 4. Samuel, born Feb. 17, 1706, mentioned below. 5. Sarah, born April 7, 1709, married Joseph Weeks, intention recorded April 23, 1726. 6. John, born June 14, 1712, married Margaret Bryar. 7. Rebecca, married Charles Smith, intention recorded July 19, 1735.



The Haley family were early settlers of Kittery and Biddeford Me. Andrew Haley was extensively engaged in fisheries at the Isles of Shoals and for him was named Haley's Island. He was a man of wealth and social standing and was known as King of the Shoals. He lived in the part of Kittery known as Spruce Creek tradition states he owned a tract of land one mile square where he lived about 1684. He married Deborah, daughter of Gowan Smith Wilson, and they had six children among them Andrew Jr. born July 25 1697, he married Elisabeth daughter of Humphrey Scammon July 15, 1697, they settled on the Haley homestead, They had seven children among them Andrew 3d, born Janury 22, 1700, He married Mary Briar of Kittery Me August 7, 1727, died in 1775. He received his father's homestead. They had six children among them Elisabeth Haley. She married Samuel Neal of Stratham NH February 7 1754.
