About Andrew Marshall Kerr, Sr.
Andrew Marshall Kerr, Sr., was a country lawyer and educator. He was the founder, and served along with others on the board of the first School in Maury County, Tennessee, called Pleasant Grove Academy, which became an important regional school to eventually become Culleoka High School by 1920. He built and owned an old home northeast of Culleoka called in historical records Whippoorwill Hills, named after a ground swift bird that sounds a peaceful but lonely cry all night long. The best available evidence is that Andrew Kerr is interred here in Wilkes Campground Cemetery and not in Greenwood Cemetery, Columbia, as some have it. That confusion arose from his son Andrew M. Kerr Jr. (newspaper editor) who died in 1843. Wherever Andrew rests, he is interred in an unmarked grave today along with his wife Clotilda Moreen Kerr, born 1794, died 1854.
