About Hon. Andrew Leete

The Honorable Andrew Leete (1643-1702) was the SON of Governor William Leete (1613-1683) & Anne Payne (1621-1668) not the son of William Leete Jr. (1645-1687) as shown in some un-researched trees. William Leete Jr (1645-1687) was the younger BROTHER of Andrew. Understandable confusion has existed as both Governor William and William Jr have the same name.

"On Sept. 12, 1666, (Gov.) William Leete wrote to Governor John Winthrop asking him (4 Mass. Hist. Soc. Coll. vii, p. 558) to try to gain Mr. Jordan’s consent to intermarriage of Jordan’s daughter Elizabeth to Leete’s son Andrew. Geneology of Connecticut Families. Volume 2 Page 340.

Speaking of Andrew Leete note the following from the same reference: “In a letter written by him (Thomas Jordan) to Mr Leete, from England, he gives his house to Andrew Leete, who had married his daughter Elizabeth Jordan, June 1, 1669.

"On Mch. 25, 1674, a letter was shown the townsmen of Guilford, fromThomas Jordan to Gov. Leete, authorizing the recording of Jordan’s land to Andrew Leete, with the condition that ‘should he bury her and take another wife,’ after his death the land ‘should go to the children of my daughter, or for want of heirs of her body to my lawful heirs.’"

" In 1706, William Leete and Caleb Leete were administrators of their grandfather ‘Mr Thomas Jordan dec’d late of old England,’ part of whose land had been laid out first to Mr William Leete and Mr Thomas Jordan in common and never divided. His grandchildren were, besides William and Caleb, Samuel, Dorothy, Abigail and Mercy Leete.” Geneology of Connecticut Families. Volume 2. p. 340.

Andrew, therefore, was the son of Governor William Leete & Anne Payne. He was the brother of William Leete Jr and husband to Elizabeth Jordan. Their children were William, Caleb, Samuel, Dorothy, Abigail & Mercy Leete. William and Caleb served as executors of their maternal grandfather’s will and American lands.

3. Hon. Andrew Leete, son of Gov. fm, m. June 1, 1669, Elizabeth Jordan, dau. of Thomas and Dorothy Jordan. He succeeded in a good degree to the position of his father, in managing the affairs of the town and to some extent of the Colony. In 1677 he was elected to the honorable office of Assistant in the Connecticut Colony, and was annually re-elected till his death. It was while holding this office ' that he became principally instrumental in secreting and preserving the charter of the Colony during the usurpation of the government by Major Andross. For a season the charter was kept in his house at Guilford. His residence was on the northwest corner of Guilford Green, on what is now the Tuttle Place. He died aged 59, Oct. 31, 1702. His wife died March 4, 1701.

19. William, b. Mar. 24, 1671, m. Hannah Stone. 20. Caleb, Dec. 10, 1673, m. Mary Hubbard. 21. Samuel, 1677, m. Hannah Graves. 22. Dorothy, 1680, m. John Hopson. 23. Abigail, 1683, m. Abraham Bradley. 24. Mercy, 1688, m. Samuel Hooker.
