Andrew 'Andy' Roy Main (1955 - 2008)

Brief overview:

Andrew (53), a vegetable farmer, was shot down in a hail of bullets with an AK47 machine gun on his farm Gilmore in Cramond. On 23rd September 2007,

This left his 54 employees jobless said Pietermaritzburg Judge Vivienne Niles-Duner when passing sentences to Andrew's killers. Niles-Duner said it was not realised how many people were left without support when farmers were murdered. Ordinary people suffered and the damage to the economy was immense. Main's farm stood fallow for at least six months during which time most of his former workers could not find jobs.

The workers toyi-toyed at the New Hanover Magistrate's Court when Main's killers made their first appearance.

    • 20/06/2011: "The local farming community has nothing but high praise for the sterling work being done by a group of dedicated policemen attached to Pietermaritzburg’s Organised Crime Unit under the command of Colonel Piet Scott, who lay claim to a near 100 percent success rate in solving farm murders in the KZN Midlands since 2003.
    • Of the nineteen Midlands farm murder cases handled by the team dating back to the murder of Shaun Clark in Camperdown (2003), only one, arising from the murder of Philip Rudolph Buys in Weenen in September 2003, is classed as “unsolved”. The unit arrested a total of 50 culprits in connection with the eighteen “solved” cases with 24 of the killers sentenced to life imprisonment and others receiving sentences ranging from an effective 30 years imprisonment to 18 years imprisonment.

    • Judge Vivienne Niles-Duner told Main's murderer, Zamo Jali (38), of Cramond, that farmer murders were a scourge, perpetrated by thugs such as he, motivated by greed and to obtain guns to commit more crimes.
    • Zamo Jali and his co-perpetrator, Mxolizi Jali, were sentenced to 24 years imprisonment. Nile-Duner said they should not be considered for parole for 25 years. Jali also got 20 years' jail for aggravated robbery, and two sentences of six years each for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
