About Aneta, Hana, Henze Reichman

Grandma Aneta/Hana/Hentza was born in Bersenesht (This is my way of English spelling. In Romanian it is spelled as Barsanesti, with small marks above each "a" and below the "s"). It was a small town/village very near Targu-Ocna. After marrying Grandpa Menashe, they lived in Targu-Ocna, and all their children were born there. They moved to Bucarest when my father, Haim (the youngest child), was about nine years old (that is around 1925). My father and two of his sisters (Aunt Laura and aunt Bella) immigrated to Israel (Then - "Palestine") during the nineteen-thirties. The rest of the family stayed in Romania.

Grandma Hana resented the idea of travelling over sea, but the events in Romania, at the end of the thirties and the beginning of fourties, and the murder of Grandpa Menashe (on January 1941) made her change her mind. The whole family (except aunt Sophie and her family) boarded the Struma on December 1941. The "ship" limped for about 4 days and reached Istanbul. There it was kept in quarantine for about 70 days. The British government and the British mandate government in "Palestine" refused to allow the refugees to continue to Israel. On February 23 1942, the Turkish police took hold of the ship and towed it back to the black sea, and left it to drift there helpless. On the morning of Feb. 24 the ship was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine. All passengers, except one, died. Total of about 769 refugees and 10 crew members. Among them Grandma Hana and all her descendants on board. Also on board were four of my mothers family. Total of 16 near family and far relatives died on this day.

There were many partners in the guilt of this crime, but in my view it was the British government who murdered my family.

She was murdered by a joint effort of the governments and leaders of Britain, Turkey, Soviet Union, Romania, Germany, and the indifference of the rest of the "free nations", while the "iIlegal immigrants ship" STRUMA, was torpedoed in the Black Sea near Shile (Turkey).
