John “Red” McNeil.

John McNeil, “Red,” (Iain Ruadh Mac Domhnaill Phiobaire) came to this country in 1817. His first wife was Mary, only daughter of Hector McKenzie (Eachun Mac’ Illeasbuig). She died in 1821 leaving a family of two sons and one daughter, viz., Neil (Red), Hector, and Mary.

His second wife was a McLean woman, sister of Neil McLean (Dubh), Baddeck. Issue: — Angus, Allan, Malcom, Rory, Donald, Michael, Katie, Lucy, and Bessie.

Angus was a blacksmith and lived in Arichat. He married Mary, daughter of Norman McNeil, (Malcom), and had a family.

From page #097 in "History of Christmas Island Parish":

Norman was a blacksmith, shipbuilder, and sea captain. He built several vessels in this parish and he used to load them with the products of the country, sail them to England, and then sell the ship as well as the cargo. He sailed in foreign seas and was once in the Holy Land. He settled at Arichat where he had an extensive forge in which about half a dozen hands were sometimes employed. He married Ursula Marmaud. Issue:Maria, Josephine, Malcolm Jeremiah Thomas, Norman, and Edward Alexander.

Maria married Angus McNeil (Red John), Arichat.
