March 23, 1836: Ann Skippon married Samuel Elwin Giles, son of Samuel Waller Giles and Margaret Elwin, in Swanton Nover, Norfolk, England. Immigrated to New York on the Thomas Bennett, arriving June 1836, with her husband and 9 children. 1840 Census: Reel 299 Page 71 (132 on right of reel) 2nd ward NYC John Skippon (40-50) employed in mfg & trades Lucy (40-50) Male (20-30) John 26 Male (15-20) Robert 18 Female (15-20) Lucy 20 Females - 2 (10-15) Mary 15 Ester 13 Females - 2 ( 5-10) Martha 8 Belinda 6 Samuel Giles (20-30) employed in mfg & trades Ann (20-30) Male (under 5) Samuel 2 1850 Census: Reel 555 - NYC 17th Ward, page 53 (indexed as 54) Ann and her husband, Samuel, a shoemaker, are listed with four of their children, ages 2 months to 12 years. 1870 Census: New Lots, East New York (Brooklyn) Ann Giles, a 53 year old "drepmaker" and her daughter Ann, age 17 and also a "drepmaker" are listed as living in the same house with daughter, Mary Ellen, age 24, her husband, James Burnham, age 24,, Lucy S. age 2, and Thomas, 4 months old. 1880 Census: 203 E. 83rd Street, Brooklyn James M. Burnham 33, a clerk in a store was living with his wife, Mary Ellen 32, who was keeping house, their children Lucy 12, Thomas 11, both attending school, Annie 5, and Annie Giles, Mary Ellen's 62 year old mother, a dressmaking who is a boarder. It was noted that Annie Giles was born in England with English parents and that the rest of this family were born in NY. 1900 census: 228 Seventh Avenue, Brooklyn Ann Giles, 84, grandmother living with daughter Mary Ellen Burnham, 50, and grandson Thomas, 30. Thomas is a clerk and has been unemployed for two months, who is renting the house. All three can read, write and speak english. January 9, 1904: Death Certificate - Bronx #183 171st St. & Sedgwick Ave. High Bridge , NY Ann Giles, 87 years 10 months and 27 days, widowed. In the US 71 years. January 12, 1904: Buried at Woodlawn Cemetery 233rd St., & Webster Ave., Bronx, NY 10470, Lot A/Range 171/Grave471900 census, living with daughter Mary Ellen Burnham and grandson Thomas. 85/354/4/19 at 228 Seventh Avenue, Brooklyn.
