About Ann Thomas
Ann Gibbes was born on January 4, 1752, to William Gibbes (1722–1789) and his second wife, Elisabeth Hasell (1725–1762), whom he had married on February 18, 1748. Ann was the great-granddaughter of Robert Gibbes (1644–1715), who had served as Lord Proprietor’s deputy, governor, and chief justice of the Province of Carolina. William Gibbes’s first wife, Mary Benison, died in 1747, and the couple’s two daughters died in infancy. Although Ann was the second child of her father’s second marriage, she was the eldest living child, her sister Constantina having died in 1751.2 Ann had three younger siblings, William Hasell (1754–1834), Elisabeth (1756–1779), and Mary (1758–1833), as well as three younger half-siblings, Robert (1763–1780), Henry (b. 1764), and Catherine Elizabeth (1768–1780). After Ann’s mother died in 1762, her father married Mary Cook (d. 1799).
