He wedded Ann, daughter of William Thornburgh, esq. of Hampsfield, in Lancashire, which lady was, through the families of Musgrave, Fitzwilliam, Plantagenet, and de Warren, fifteenth in descent from King WILLIAM the Conqeror. By her he had issue,

  • The last of the name to hold two estates of Preston Richard and Preston Patrick was Sir John De Preston, who was also a member of Parliament in the time of Edward III. He had two sons, Sir Richard and Sir John. Sir Richard, the oldest son, had only daughters, and through the heirship of these daughters the manor of Preston Richard was carried from the family.
    • Sir John the second son and the last of the De Preston succeeded to the estate of Preston Patrick. He was a judge of the Court of Common Pleas under Henry IV and Henry V. His oldest son John, a Catholic priest, received from Henry V a grant of the church of Sandal. His second son and heir, Richard Preston, added to the estate of Preston Patrick the manor of Under Levins Hall, Westmoreland. His daughter married Thomas De Ros, owner of Kendal Castle, from whom was descended Queen Catherine Parr.
      • Richard's grandson John, married Margaret Reymayne of Harewood Castle, Yorkshire, and Over Levins Hall, Westmoreland. Their son, Sir Thomas, married Ann Thornburgh, a direct descendant of William of Normandy.


  • Elizabeth Leybourne was the daughter of Sir James Leyburne of Cunswick by his wife, Helen Preston. Helen Preston (d. AFT 1567) was the daughter of Sir Thomas Preston of Preston Patrick, Westmorland (d. 1523) and Anne Thornborough. She married first Sir James Leyburne of Cunswick and second, c. 1549, Thomas Stanley, 2nd baron Mounteagle (b. 25 May 1507 - d. 25 Aug 1560).

  • Preston, John, of Furness Abbey, in the Liberty of Furness, and of Preston Patrick and Under Levens in Westmorland, born in 1511, was the eldest son of Sir Thos. Preston, by Ann, d. of Wm. Thornburgh, of Hampsfield.   • Thornburgh, William, of Hampsfield Hall, in the parish or Cartmel, s. & h. of Sir Wm. Thornburgh, mar. Ethelred, d. of Sir Thomas Carus, of Kirkby Lonsdale, co. Westm., and Halton Hall, co. Lanc., Justice of the King's Bench, by Cath., d. of Thos. Preston, of Preston Patrick. The Thornburghs also owned Skelsmergh, Selside and Whitwell halls, co. Westm. One of them was president of Douay College from 1738 to 1750, and the family remained staunch to the faith till its extinction in the male line in the eighteenth century. The estates passed with Mary, d. of George Thornburgh (or Thornborough), of Leyburn, co. York, and grand- daughter and heiress of Wm. Thornburgh, of Selside Hall, Hampsfield, Skelsmergh, etc. (who died Jan. 31, 1743-4) into the family or her husband, Ralph Riddell, of Cheeseburn Grange, Northumberland, second son of Thomas Riddell, of Swinburn Castle and Felton Park, and heir to his uncle, Ralph Widdrington, of Cheeseburn Grange.
