Yetta Channa (Henriete Anna) Weintraub was born in Kosice Kassa Slovakia around 1830. She became the first Jewish Woman in Hungary to be a public school teacher. According to her daughter, Rebecca Bettelheim Kohut “The Jewish Villagers of Kamron, where she lived looked upon this women (Yetta Weintraub) with distrust, even ostracized her. She was too well educated, too enlightened. As a mere girl she had won their disapproval by being the first Jewess to become a school teacher in Hungary …..It was against all tradition for a woman to be anything but subservient. And in the Jewish towns and villages of Hungary tradition sat unquestioned upon the throne, mighty, dictatorial. So we can imagine what was thought of this woman who chose the class-room rather than the kitchen for her sphere.” 1
