About Anna Coltman

Anna Duckworth

Lady Coltman, née Anna Duckworth. Daughter of George Duckworth and Mary Duckworth. Siblings include Samuel, William (4 April 1795--1876) and Eliza. She was probably born 3 March 1799 -- at any rate, she was christened later that month in the church that her parents had married in on July 25 1784: Saint Mary-the-Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, generally called Blackburn Cathedral. She was painted (aged 20) by Joseph Allen (1769-1839), who founded Liverpool Academy in 1810, and photographed by Camille Silvy on 30 April 1861 (now in National Portrait Gallery). She married Sir Thomas Coltman (20 May 1793--), who became one of the justices of the court of common pleas at Westminster. (His father was the reverend Joseph Coltman of Beverley.) She is mentioned in Elizabeth Gaskell Letters (page 859 shows she had a wide number of influential friends) as an acquaintance of Florence Nightingale (Collected works p.457). Seems to have been a great admirer of Wm Gaskell. Lady C guessed very early that Mrs G was the author of Mary Barton. (p.65)
