About Anna May Kelley
Known as "Nanny" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Married in her parents' home in Austin during a hot Texas summer (August). Papaw always told the story about their hot hotel room with a tiny fan on their honeymoon, and how they picked up and moved to another hotel (or room) to get a bigger fan during the 1936 heat wave. They were there for the Texas Centennial celebration at the State Fair.
Enjoyed listening to baseball on the radio.
----------------------------------
This exceptional daughter was delivered at home- for ten dollars. As a student, she was a spelling bee champion and double promoted- twice. She also played the piano, though being on the shy side, she preferred accompanying to performing solo. Her most unique skill, however, was whistling . . her range/tone earning her spots on radio.
Determined to be a secretary, she attended the University of Texas (mastering shorthand and typing an amazing l00+ wpm on manual machines). She worked for the celebrated author, J. Frank Dobie, in this capacity and was later hired at the Department of Public Safety. Unfortunately, nepotism laws forced her to resign when she married a state trooper.
A "modern" woman with traditional values. - Nancy Kelley Dodge
